Yesterday, my daughter went to a wonderful birthday party in Heisler Park, overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The party mom had to get there at 6am to reserve the spot, but it was worth it.
"Grace" is the most recent public art in Laguna Beach created at the new lifeguard HQ at Main Beach.5/18/2014 "Grace", is the most recent public art commissioned for Laguna Beach at the newly constructed lifeguard headquarters at Main Beach. Terry Thornsley created this bronze, copper and stainless steel mural that includes two figures rowing a dory through churning seas. We will stop at this impressive piece on my Heisler Park/ Downtown Tour. Go to www.LagunaBeachWalks.com to purchase tickets for this fun and engaging two-hour walking tour.
Walking around Heisler Park, I usually see a plein air painter doing their thing. En plein air in French means "in open air". You can also describe this as peinture sur le motif , which means "painting on the ground". For more events and workshops in Laguna Beach, en plein air, go to LPAPA.org (Laguna Plein Air Painters Association).
Have you ever dreamed about getting married in Laguna Beach, somewhere overlooking the Pacific Ocean, but thought it would be too expensive? You can get a wedding permit for the Gazebo in Heisler Park for only $255! For more information, go to www.lagunabeachcity.net.
Have you ever been to Jahraus Park in Laguna Beach? If you come on my Heisler Park / Downtown tour you will see it. "Deer Warrior" is there looking a little scary or protective? "Boy and Dog" is there with a drinking fountain in the back for the boy and one in the front for the dog. Mr. Jahraus is famous for saving Heisler Park from development. When you do something like that, you get your own park!
Every Sunday at 9am in Heisler Park, I see a group doing Qigong. This is a practice aligning body, breath, mind for health, meditation, and martial arts training. It says it can help wide range of medical conditions including hypertension, pain, and cancer. Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan were followers of this practice.
The other day I was jogging by Larry Gill's "Water Lilly" sculpture and saw him there fixing the water pump. Join me on my Heisler Park / Downtown Tour to see three of his pieces: "Water Lilly", "Tidepool Paddleboard", and "North and South Waves". You can also see Larry exhibiting at the Sawdust Festival this summer.
The purple Pride of Madeira are blooming all over Laguna Beach! Come on my Heisler Park/Downtown Tour to see these woody flowering stalks visited by bees and butterflies.
Last night I was honored to take the 6th grade Laguna Beach Girl Scout troop on my Heisler Park walking tour. When we arrived at the 9/11 memorial piece, none other than Jorg Dubin himself was there to talk to the girls about his famous work called, "Semper Momento". He told us when the two World Trade Center beams arrived in Laguna Beach, they had an American flag draped over them. Jorg buried that flag under his artwork right there in Heisler Park.
